CTO of Ministry of External Affairs Discusses Security

In an in-depth interview, Golok Simli, CTO at India's Union Ministry of External Affairs, sizes up the shortcomings of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and discusses the ongoing challenges involved in protecting privacy.

"The first problem with our legal framework, to start with, is we don't have clear-cut roles, responsibilities, accountabilities and obligations defined," Simli says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. He contends that the Information Technology Act, 2000 is insufficient to deal with the cyber threats and social media privacy issues the nation faces today.

Too many organizations fail to consider the risks involved when storing data, Simli stresses. For example, they "don't even do a preliminary risk assessment of the data [they] are going to collect," he points out.

In this interview (see audio link below image), Simli also discusses data security issues in the government. He addresses:

  • Cybersecurity technologies deployed by his department;
  • Why securing government networks isn't so simple;
  • Where government departments are missing the mark when it comes to information security.

Simli is chief technology officer at the Union Ministry of External Affairs. He has over 25 years of experience in IT, including 12 years in government. Previously, he worked for the Reserve Bank of India and in the oil and gas industry as well as banking and finance.
