Launching effective user education and implementing the right endpoint security technologies are two essential steps to help mitigate the threat of ransomware attacks, says Ashish Sud, zonal head, Western India at Sophos.

"Users are still naïve. They click on any email which is thrown at them," Sud says. "It's important that we keep educating the users to be able to identify phishing emails."

He also stresses, however, that it's "equally important that the technology that they are using at the endpoint should be capable of handling next-generation threats."

Another key step, he says, is for security to "start working as a system where different silos start sharing information with each other and be able to identify and isolate a threat at a single point and not let it spread further."

In this interview (see audio link below the image) at Information Security Media Group's at the recent Fraud and Breach Prevention Summit in Mumbai, Sud also discusses:

  • Why removing unnecessary administrative privileges is important;
  • What steps need to be taken to prevent ransomware attacks;
  • Security trends to look forward to in 2018.

Sud is head of the western region of India for Sophos Technologies. In a career spanning over 20 years in cybersecurity, he has helped armed forces and internal security agencies secure their tactical and strategic communications over radio and satellite networks.
