The Most Pressing Security Needs of the SMB and Midmarket

SonicWall's Bob VanKirk on Key Differences Between Small, Large Client Requirements
Bob VanKirk, president and CEO, SonicWall

Small and midsize businesses need proactive measures to ensure security just as much as any large organization. But challenges abound for SMBs as they struggle with a smaller staff and budget constraints, making them more vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Bob VanKirk, president and CEO, SonicWall, highlighted the need for SMBs to have access to the right set of tools and resources to defend their companies and protect their brands. In order to ensure cybersecurity, VanKirk said, organizations must have all the threat data at their fingertips, whether it be a firewall, endpoint or remote access, and have analytics across all those areas (see: New SonicWall CEO Bob VanKirk on XDR, SASE & Going Upmarket).

"Companies need to pool all the threat data together," VanKirk said. "SonicWall constantly gathers data every hour from 1.1 million sensors around the globe, and that contributes to a high degree of security efficacy. It's taking that key threat data and acting on it right, connecting it from the network level down to the endpoint from the cloud and tying that together."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, VanKirk also discusses:

  • Key considerations for SMBs when evaluating MDR and XDR technology;
  • How vendors can make SASE and ZTNA more accessible to small business;
  • The most valuable security services MSPs and MSSPs can provide to SMBs.

Under VanKirk's guidance, the team is focused on continuing its efforts to transform the business and key offerings to the cloud and offer new value-add security capabilities via its extensive partner network. Prior to joining SonicWall, VanKirk was executive vice president of global sales and marketing with Silent Circle.
